THE JOY OF CONTESTS!
Contest season is upon us! The month of February is when many Toastmasters Clubs are holding their International Speech and Table Topics Contests. In March, the Area Contests are being held for the winners of the different clubs to compete against each other. For example Orlando Toastmasters Club #28 will be having it's International Speech and Table Topics Contests on March the 1st. [See the "Club Articles" page of this website for more information on the contests.]
This year our International Speech contest are shaping up to be one of the best that this club has ever had.
As with most clubs, the International Speech Contest highlights the best speakers of the club as an example to the other members of the club and as a source of inspiration to all. The upcoming Club #28 International speech contest features such admired speakers as Barbara Cusack, Alan Brents, Laval Brown, Jennifer Hensley and Walk Jones. All of these speakers have distinguished themselves as brilliant orators and are fully capable of winning a speech contest.
The real winners however are the people who get to listen to them compete!
Going to an International Speech Contest is one of the most rewarding experiences that anyone could do. You will hear entertaining and inspiring speeches that will often touch your emotions, let you enjoy a little humor, motivate you to do great things and make you think. You never know what you will hear at an International Speech Contest but one thing is for sure: you will always feel as if you have spent your time wisely and you will be a better person for it.
I highly, highly recommend that ANY toastmaster attend as many Club and Area contests as possible over the next couple of months. The benefits are many and you will meet scores of toastmasters and new friends from all over the district. One thing is certain, you will be entertained.
Many people enjoy the Table Topics Contest just as much as the International Speech contest. Here, toastmasters learn to think quickly on their feet and speak, "off the cuff" . The challenge is to answer a question. Everyone answers the same question and the best answer wins. The trick is that no one knows the question until it is asked!
It is amazing the different answers you can get to the same question!
Club #28's Table Topics Contest features brand new toastmasters, established veteran club members and some with TM experience between those two. This contest looks to be one of the most interesting competitions in Central Florida, perhaps the entire Southeast... maybe the whole nation! It take a sharp, quick mind to compete and Mike King, Milka Derisma, Walk Jones, Janet Madden and Diane Hart all certainly qualify. Thank you all for volunteering to take part this year. I can hardly wait.
The Orlando Toastmasters Club #28 International Speech and Table Topics Contests: March 1, 2012 at 7:00pm (sharp) at the Herndon Branch Library 4324 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando, Florida 32803.
I'll see you there!
Happy Toastmastering!
